What durability actually means in outdoor storage
Durability in outdoor bike storage is not just about how a product looks after a year. It is about how it performs after ten or twenty. A product that needs repainting, part replacement, or significant upkeep within its first decade is not durable in any meaningful sense, and its total cost of ownership is much higher than the purchase price suggests.
The most important factor is the treatment of the steel frame. Standard painted steel corrodes in outdoor conditions, particularly in coastal or northern European climates. Hot-dip galvanising, where steel is submerged in molten zinc, creates a bonded protective layer that does not peel or flake and significantly extends working life.

How Fietshangar is built to last
Fietshangar uses a hot-dip galvanised steel frame and a powder-coated corrugated roof, designed for permanent outdoor installation without ongoing maintenance. It has a 25-year technical lifespan and is made from 98 percent sustainable materials, important for both longevity and end-of-life considerations.
Cities including Rotterdam have Fietshangars installed from the early 2000s still in active service. Over 1,100 units are deployed in Rotterdam alone, which provides real-world evidence of long-term performance at scale rather than just manufacturer claims.
