Fietshangar Joins New York City's Secure Bike Parking Pilot

First steps for residential bike storage


The Fietshangar 2.5N model has been launched as part of New York City’s Department of Transportation’s Secure Bike Parking pilot, together with partners Tranzito, Bikeep, MetroBike, and Metro Express. The pilot targets residents of walk‑up apartment buildings, which typically lack indoor bike storage and have limited secure options at street level. This residential‑scale unit, sized for about six bikes, uses digital access instead of a physical key.


NYC DOT has also outlined plans for larger-capacity units at transit hubs and other high-traffic destinations as the programme develops. According to NYC DOT, the pilot is expected to bring roughly 500 units online in its initial phase, with further expansion under consideration for the following year. Locations are being chosen based on public demand collected through the department's feedback map, with residents requesting secure parking near their homes, subway stations and schools.

From the Netherlands to New York


New York is Fietshangar's first deployment in the United States, and it extends a track record built over nearly 30 years, including more than 1,100 units in Rotterdam. The same certified security standard behind that record, tested through decades of daily use in Dutch cities, is now being applied on the other side of the Atlantic.


It's a sign of how far a proven, standards-based approach to bike parking can travel: what started as infrastructure for Dutch municipalities is now set to be part of one of the largest cycling networks in the United States.
