New York City is set to take a major step toward secure, accessible urban mobility with the rollout of 500 bike parking units across the five boroughs.

The Department of Transportation has selected mobility infrastructure firm Tranzito to deliver what will become the largest secure bike-parking initiative in the United States, combining multiple secure bike parking forms: modular bike rooms from Dero Bike Racks, smart bike racks from Bikeep and Fietshangar (as part of North Amerian distributor Bike Barns).

A breakthrough for Secure Bike Storage

New Yorkers have long called for secure, dedicated bike storage, especially in a city where most people live in small apartments and make more than 600,000 cycling trips a day. Lack of safe parking has been a major barrier to wider bicycle use.

A new five-year program aims to change that. Starting in May, the city will roll out hundreds of weather-protected, app-accessible bike lockers, with possible e-bike charging as demand for micromobility grows. Advocates say the system will reduce theft, expand mobility access, and support both daily riders and delivery workers.

No U.S. city has attempted bike parking at this scale. Data on usage, community response, and ridership will guide expansion, and if successful, New York could set a new national model for secure, app-managed bike parking.
