How to plan bike parking for new developments

Cycle parking as a planning requirement

From a planning and compliance perspective, bike storage in new build developments is no longer optional in most markets. Building regulations and local planning policies in the Netherlands, UK, Germany, and elsewhere specify minimum cycle parking provision, and increasingly they specify quality standards, not just numbers.

Planning requirements typically distinguish between short-stay and long-stay parking, and between covered and secure provision. Long-stay residential parking is expected to be covered and secure. This rules out open racks and most basic shelters as compliant solutions.

How Fietshangar supports planning applications

Fietshangar meets the highest security standards in the market: SKG-IKOB KE 470 and the Dutch Police Keurmerk. It can be cited in planning applications as independently certified secure cycle parking. This simplifies the approval process and reduces the risk of a planning condition requiring a product change later in the project.

Fietshangar is modular, available in two widths, and specifiable in any RAL colour to meet design requirements. It works for both private outdoor space and on-street allocation, which matters for denser urban sites where courtyard space is limited.
